Breast Augmentation Revision Surgery
Cost: Estimate Available Upon Consultation
Breast augmentation surgery can literally be a life-altering experience for women who have lived their entire lives dissatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts, so the frustration and disappointment when the surgery results in complications or does not result in the physique you want can be very intense and undermine your entire well-being. In Las Vegas, Nevada, Medical Director and lead plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards is pleased to offer breast revision surgery, a corrective procedure designed to correct or improve upon the results of a prior breast augmentation. Although similar in nature to a standard breast augmentation, breast revision is a more challenging, complex procedure which must account for potential complications and alterations resulting from the prior procedure. Dr. Richards has both the talent and experience to ensure that these complications—both anticipated and unforeseen—do not stand in the way of naturally-beautiful results!

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation Revision?
Women seeking breast augmentation revision generally do so to correct a complication stemming from the prior surgery, because the results of the prior surgery did not meet their aesthetic goals, or because their aesthetic goals have changed over time.
Implant Complications: Implant technology has continued to improve drastically over the past decade, with many breast implant manufacturers—including Sientra and Mentor, whose implants are offered by Dr. Richards—now offering warranty programs. However, use of an implant continues to involve some risk of potential complications. Breast revision may become necessary to correct a complication stemming from the implant itself or from a shift in implant placement. Some of the most common complications include:
- Capsular contracture: This is the most common implant-related complication. Contracture occurs when the scar tissue around the breast implant hardens, causing the breast to feel hard, appear too round or firm (“grapefruit breasts”), and in serious cases become tender and even painful. Revision involves removing the scar tissue with a capsulectomy.
- Visible rippling, ridges, or wrinkling, which is more likely to occur when too much natural breast tissue was removed during the original procedure or as a result of sub-glandular (above the pectoral muscle) placement of the implant.
- Deflation or rupture of the breast implant.
- Improper implant placement can make the implants look too far apart or too low on the chest, or create cleavage that is too wide.
- So-called “double-bubble” deformity, where the original breast tissue appears to sit on top of the implant.
- Asymmetrical breasts or unnatural-looking nipples resulting from improperly-performed breast reconstruction surgery.
Dissatisfaction with Results: Selecting the perfect size, shape, and profile for your breast augmentation can be difficult, and unfortunately, many women simply find that they are dissatisfied with the size of the original implant. In fact, a recent FDA surgery shows that 37% of all breast revision surgeries in the United States stem from women wanting larger implants, although desire for smaller implants is also common. For some women, of course, their aesthetic preferences have changed over time. Breast revision surgery is frequently performed for women who want to change the type of implant (silicone to saline, or vice versa) or simply want the implant removed entirely (in which case a simultaneous breast lift may be required). In some cases, breast augmentation revision may be required for women whose breasts have changed over time as a result of the natural aging process, pregnancy, or dramatic weight fluctuations
Your breast revision surgical plan, including details of the procedure and recovery, will heavily depend upon the reasons for your decision to pursue revision surgery, the specific implant modifications or corrections you wish to make, and your ultimate aesthetic goals. As with breast augmentation surgery, there are many options to choose from to ensure that your final results meet your aesthetic requirements. Dr. Richards will help guide you through every decision slowly and carefully, offering his expert advice to ensure optimal surgical outcome and fulfillment of your unique breast surgery goals.
