Thanks to intensive research efforts and advances in both modern medicine and surgical techniques, survival rates for breast cancer have skyrocketed in recent decades: according to the most recent statistics from the National Cancer Institute, nearly ¾ of women diagnosed with breast cancer in stages 1, 2, and 3 can now expect to survive what was once considered to be a death sentence. Still, beating breast cancer takes a significant toll on a woman’s life, and often requires invasive surgical procedures to remove both the cancer and surrounding breast tissue, often resulting in the loss of all or most of the natural breast. This loss of a “feminine profile” can be as emotionally devastating as the cancer diagnosis itself, undermining her self-confidence and self-esteem just when she should be celebrating life and enjoying it to its fullest.
Just as advanced surgical techniques are enabling the medical community to defeat cancer in ever greater numbers, similar techniques now enable a woman who has undergone a lumpectomy or mastectomy to regain breasts that look and feel completely natural. Breast reconstructive surgery can create one new breast to exactly match the existing breast to ensure a symmetrical and beautiful chest profile, or the reconstruction can create completely new breast and nipple-areola complexes for both breasts. Breast reconstruction utilizing today’s advanced surgical techniques and cutting-edge, high quality breast implants can help women who have defeated breast cancer regain a sense of normalcy and beauty so important in facilitating true recovery!

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards performs delayed breast reconstruction utilizing state-of-the-art breast implants by Sientra and Mentor, two of the leading manufacturers of FDA-approved breast implants with extremely high standards of safety and durability, backed by company-implemented warranty programs. The use of breast implants enables Dr. Richards to reconstruct breasts that look and feel extremely natural, match the unique physique and frame of each woman, and meet each patient’s specific aesthetic goals. Dr. Richards will work closely with you to determine your aesthetic goals, help you understand the differences in implant type, and select the implant most suited to meet your needs. Implant choices include:
Material: silicone or saline
Size: available in a range of pre-determined sizes or can be filled to customizable size, depending on implant type
Shape: round or anatomical/teardrop
Texture of shell: smooth or textured
Profile: a higher profile creates a more prominent silhouette
In some cases, tissue expanders may be required in advance of the implant-based reconstruction in order to re-build sufficient natural breast tissue to hold the implant in place. The use of tissue expanders is a multi-stage process: first, the tissue expander is positioned in place to act as a temporary spacer, then filled as much as possible without damaging existing incisions. Over the course of several weeks, the remaining natural breast tissue stretches and expands; the expander can be filled multiple times during this process if larger breasts are desired. Finally, the tissue expander is replaced with the desired implant.
Delayed breast reconstruction can be performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Because the procedure and recovery are both highly unique to each individual patient, details relating to both pre-operative preparation and post-operative care will be provided to each patient during the pre-operative consultation. It is critical to follow all instructions precisely to maximize the success of your breast reconstruction, as well as minimize the risk of complications and extended discomfort.
