Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
The eyes are said to be the “windows into the soul”, but after years of constant exposure to the sun and environmental pollutants, sustained damage from stress, poor sleep habits, and the effects of aging and gravity, the eyes should more truthfully be called “windows into our true age.” Wrinkles and creases, puffiness and sagging—these and other common, unwelcome aesthetic changes take their toll on the delicate, fragile skin of the eyelids and unfortunately, often make us look weary, worn out, and older than we feel.
A blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift) is a powerful restorative surgery that can correct unappealing alterations to the shape and appearance of the eyelid contributing to a perpetually tired, worn out, and older appearance. Even relatively small corrections to the skin and tissues of the lower and/or upper eyelids can have an incredible rejuvenating impact on the entire face. Blepharoplasty is an ideal cosmetic option for patients seeking to:
- Correct the appearance of folds in the upper eyelid, which can alter the natural shape of the eyes and even impair eyesight
- Eliminate fine lines and wrinkles around the eye, so-called “crow's feet”
- Reduce the visibility of “bags” under the eyes
- Tighten sagging, droopy, or puffy lower eyelids
- Remove excess fatty deposits at the root of swollen upper eyelids

Eyelid Lift Surgery Options
A blepharoplasty can involve either the upper lid, the lower lid, or both together, and is often performed in conjunction with other forms of facial rejuvenation surgery such as a facelift or browlift for optimal anti-aging results. In all cases, Dr. Richards takes great care to utilize very small incisions, placed discreetly within the natural structures of the eye to minimize post-operative visible scarring. The three main forms of blepharoplasty include:
- A Lower Eyelid Lift will correct sagging and drooping skin on the lower eyelid, as well as unsightly bags under the eyes, by making an incision in the lower lash line, excising surplus skin, and removing or remodeling excess tissues under the eyes.
- An Upper Eyelid Lift involves the removal of excess skin and the tightening of the musculature and/or skin, and the adjustment (or removal) or excess fatty deposits through an incision hidden in the naturally-occurring crease in the upper eyelid.
Transconjunctival Lower Eyelid Surgery, so-called because it involves a transconjunctival incision hidden inside the lower eyelid, is usually ideal for treatment of eyelid ptosis (sagging), as well as the removal of excess fat.
Blepharoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure with IV sedation or general anesthesia. Most patients will require at least one week of recovery time, during which proper sun protection is vital; we strongly recommend the constant use of darkly-tinted glasses throughout your recovery period. Post-blepharoplasty side effects, such as minor bruising, swelling, and irritation, as well as dry eyes, may be treated with antibiotic ointments, over-the-counter pain medication, and cold compresses.
