Rhinoplasty
As the central feature of the face and the primary passageway through which we breathe, the nose plays a critical role in both our appearance and our physical health. For individuals who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose, the effect on their self-confidence and emotional well-being can be truly profound, while structural nasal problems that affect breathing can seriously undermine their physical well-being. For these reasons, rhinoplasty continues to be one of the most common surgical procedures performed today. Designed to change the size, shape, and/or functional structure of the nose or nasal cavities, rhinoplasty can resolve a number of cosmetic and/or functional issues:
Cosmetic:
- Nose that is too large or too wide
- Eliminate a bump or depression on the bridge of the nose
- Change the shape of the nostrils
- Reshape the tip of the nose
- Correct a crooked or off-center nose
Functional:
- Reconstruct or repair the nose after injury or trauma
- Correct deviated septum
- Repair collapsed nasal valves
- Reduce enlarged inferior turbinates

Rhinoplasty Procedure and Recovery
Dr. Richards performs his rhinoplasty procedures in the comfort of his private surgical practice in Las Vegas either under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the patient's level of comfort. Most rhinoplasties can be completed within an hour or two.
The procedure begins with a small incision at the base of the columella, the strip of tissue separating the nostrils. The surgeon then separates the skin from the bone and cartilage of the nose, which enables him to make accurate and very precise alterations to the nasal structures required to ensure beautiful and harmonious results. Once the structures of the nose are reshaped according to the surgical plan, the skin is carefully re-draped over the new framework and sutured into place. To help the nose retain its new shape, a split is applied to the bridge of the nose and nasal packs placed in the nostrils to stabilize the septum.
The most common side effects of rhinoplasty include swelling and bruising around the nose, eyes, and cheeks, as well as minor bleeding and stuffiness. Discomfort can be treated with prescription-strength painkillers, cold compresses, and elevation of the head; patients must refrain from blowing the nose while the tissues are healing. Most patients require one to two weeks of recovery time to allow side effects and discomfort to subside, but may find it takes several weeks to resume all normal activities. Patients should avoid wearing glasses on the bridge of the nose for at least six weeks after the procedure.
